Introducing Ghana’s Biggest Datathon: AI4Startups

In recent years, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has infiltrated every sector: education, architecture, science, healthcare, and beyond. Agriculture has been no exception. However, in West Africa, particularly Ghana, AI adoption in agriculture is still lagging behind.

Ghana, a country heavily dependent on agriculture, has seen a decline in its once-acclaimed agricultural output due to factors such as poor irrigation management, ineffective crop monitoring, and, in some cases, labor shortages. Imagine how AI could revolutionize Ghana’s agricultural sector if given the right opportunity.

Well, that opportunity is here!

Blossom Academy, in partnership with Digital Africa, will be hosting a Datathon on October 17–18, 2025, in Accra.

What to Expect

The two-day event will focus on AI-driven solutions for the AgriTech sector, using ideation frameworks and agile problem-solving to develop practical and scalable outcomes.

The data for the Datathon will be sourced through consultations with two to three local AgriTech startups in Ghana, identifying core operational challenges they face.

The program will emphasize high-impact applications of AI, such as crop yield prediction and supply chain optimization, ensuring solutions align with both startup needs and the broader agricultural ecosystem. This initiative also seeks to spark youth interest in agriculture while improving farming practices across the country.

Event Structure

Day 1: Immersive ideation sessions, team formation (groups of five), and prototyping with guidance from experienced mentors.

Day 2: Refining prototypes and final presentations to the jury.

Each group will be assigned a mentor to ensure their solutions are holistic, competitive, and impactful.

Judging & Prizes

A jury panel of five distinguished professionals in technology, AI, agriculture, and startup innovation—curated in collaboration with Digital Africa—will evaluate solutions based on:

  • Technical innovation
  • Feasibility
  • Fit with AgriTech needs
  • Scalability
  • Pitch clarity

 Prizes:

  • 1st Prize: €2,000
  • 2nd Prize:€1,500
  • 3rd Prize: €1,000

Bonus Prize: €500 for the best model developed by a majority women-led team. Winning teams will also receive continued support, including DataCamp scholarships and mentorship from experts within our network, helping them refine their prototypes into deployable solutions.

Who Can Apply?

Participation will be in groups of five, and ten groups in total. The selection process will require participants to submit brief profiles highlighting:

Technical expertise (coding, data analysis, etc.)

Demonstrated interest in agriculture and AI innovation

Commitment to diversity (gender, academic, and institutional backgrounds)

Selected participants will receive confirmation at least two weeks before the event, along with pre-hackathon materials such as challenge overviews and dataset guidelines. All winners will be required to provide necessary documentation and comply with participation rules.

This Datathon is more than just a competition; it’s an opportunity to create real-world, AI-powered solutions that can transform Ghana’s agricultural sector and inspire the next generation of innovators.
