Q&A with Elizabeth N. Akossey GIZ 3 ‘24

PLEASE DESCRIBE WHY YOU CHOSE TO APPLY FOR THE BLOSSOM ACADEMY FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM.

I chose to apply for the Blossom Academy Fellowship Program because it aligns with the growing interest I developed in nursing informatics after taking a course on a nursing learning platform called the World Continuing Education Alliance (WCEA). That experience opened my eyes to how technology and data can improve healthcare delivery and sparked my desire to explore the field further.

When I later came across the Blossom Academy Fellowship Program and heard positive recommendations from friends and others in tech, I saw it as the perfect opportunity to pursue the path I had become passionate about while building practical skills and gaining industry exposure.

CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR CAREER RESPONSIBILITIES?

Currently, I work as a Product Developer, where I support the development and improvement of digital learning products and educational solutions.

My responsibilities also include training students and beginners in coding, tutoring and mentoring learners in technology, and guiding others on career paths in tech.

I also contribute ideas for product improvements, help review and test platform features, and support the creation of engaging learning experiences while helping others build confidence and technical skills.

HOW DID BLOSSOM ACADEMY SUPPORT YOU IN PREPARING FOR YOUR CAREER?

Blossom Academy supported me in preparing for my career by providing practical exposure to the tech industry and helping me better understand how to apply technology and data skills to solve real-world problems.

The program also helped me build confidence in my learning journey through mentorship, hands-on projects, and interactions with like-minded individuals. Furthermore, it strengthened my interest in technology and gave me clearer direction on the career path I want to pursue in the future.

IF YOU COULD GO BACK AND SPEAK TO YOURSELF ON YOUR FIRST DAY AT BLOSSOM ACADEMY, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY NOW?

If I could go back and speak to myself on my first day at Blossom Academy, I would say: do not doubt yourself or feel intimidated by the journey ahead. Keep learning consistently, ask questions without fear, and fully embrace every opportunity to grow.

I would also remind myself that growth takes time, and that every challenge along the way helps build the skills, confidence, and direction needed for the future.

WHICH INDUSTRY OR SECTOR IN AFRICA DO YOU BELIEVE HAS THE GREATEST UNTAPPED POTENTIAL FOR DATA & AI, AND WHY?

I believe the healthcare sector in Africa has one of the greatest untapped potentials for data and AI. Many parts of the healthcare system still rely heavily on manual record-keeping, fragmented data, and limited predictive tools, especially in rural and under-resourced areas.

With better use of data and AI, we can improve early disease detection, optimize maternal and child health outcomes, support better resource allocation in hospitals, and strengthen decision-making for frontline health workers.

Given my background in healthcare and growing interest in health informatics, I see this as a space where data-driven solutions can have a direct and life-changing impact on people’s lives across the continent.
