Q&A with Onyinyechi Ofondu, GIZ 2 ‘22

PLEASE DESCRIBE WHY YOU CHOSE TO APPLY FOR THE BLOSSOM ACADEMY FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM.

I have a background in statistics and have mostly had a passion for numbers. When I heard about data and data science/analysis, it was like a gate opening. I wanted to learn how to use numbers or data to solve real-life problems. (As opposed to theory). I heard about Blossom Academy from a friend and, after some research, realized it’s a gateway to practical learning in data science, data analysis, Machine Learning, and AI. So I applied.

CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR CAREER RESPONSIBILITIES?

I am a data analyst and product manager. I build dashboards on Looker Studio and automated data from Google Sheets (with app script) to Looker Studio. I also manage an Educational product at Enova University. I make sure the processes I automated are running smoothly and build new dashboards where necessary.

HOW DID BLOSSOM ACADEMY SUPPORT YOU IN PREPARING FOR YOUR CAREER?

Blossom Academy was pivotal in my career. I learnt how to think like a data professional, use data tools, and solve problems with data. I also got experience in interviews. And I got to work in an internship and learn hands-on how to use data to solve problems.

IF YOU COULD GO BACK AND SPEAK TO YOURSELF ON YOUR FIRST DAY AT BLOSSOM ACADEMY, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY NOW?

Learn as much as you can. Ask questions, even the stupid ones. Put yourself out there. Keep in touch.

WHICH INDUSTRY OR SECTOR IN AFRICA DO YOU BELIEVE HAS THE GREATEST UNTAPPED POTENTIAL FOR DATA & AI, AND WHY?

Agriculture. We have a lot of fertile land, and we have a lot of local farmers. However, food is still expensive. In the African space, we need to leverage data to improve the industry. It’ll change our lives internally and boost export exploits.
