Q&A with Thacien Haragirimana Digital Africa Rwanda DA ’26

PLEASE DESCRIBE WHY YOU CHOSE TO APPLY FOR THE BLOSSOM ACADEMY FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM.

I chose to apply for the Blossom Academy Fellowship because it aligned with my goal of becoming an impact-driven data professional. With a background in Applied Statistics, I sought to strengthen my practical data skills through industry relevant training, mentorship, and real-world projects. Blossom Academy’s focus on problem-solving and applied learning prepared me to use data to drive informed decisions and create meaningful impact in Africa.

CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR CAREER RESPONSIBILITIES?

I was responsible for collecting, cleaning, analyzing, and interpreting data to support decision-making and reporting. I worked with statistical tools to prepare reports and dashboards, collaborated with teams to monitor and evaluate programs, and improved data quality across projects. In addition, as a co-founder and Director at EduConnect Rwanda, I led data-driven educational initiatives, coordinated teams, and supported strategic planning and program implementation,

HOW DID BLOSSOM ACADEMY SUPPORT YOU IN PREPARING FOR YOUR CAREER?

Blossom Academy supported me by strengthening my technical and professional skills through hands-on, industry-focused training. The program improved my ability to solve real-world problems using data, work effectively in teams, and communicate insights clearly, which better prepared me for my career.

IF YOU COULD GO BACK AND SPEAK TO YOURSELF ON YOUR FIRST DAY AT BLOSSOM ACADEMY, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY NOW?

I would tell myself to stay curious, ask questions without fear, and fully embrace the learning process. I would also remind myself to trust the journey, collaborate with others, and take every challenge as an opportunity to grow both professionally and personally.

WHICH INDUSTRY OR SECTOR IN AFRICA DO YOU BELIEVE HAS THE GREATEST UNTAPPED POTENTIAL FOR DATA & AI, AND WHY?

I believe the agriculture sector in Africa has the greatest untapped potential for data and AI. Agriculture employs a large portion of the population, yet data-driven decision-making remains limited. Applying data and AI can improve productivity, climate resilience, supply chain efficiency, and food security, leading to sustainable economic growth across the continent.
